Cause You’re Hot Then You’re Cold

July 23rd, 2012 · No Comments · Sleep Science

Katy Perry says it best in her hit song (one of many), Hot N Cold, when she describes the indecisiveness many of us face. One of her lyrics, “cause you’re hot then you’re cold”, is a line that could explain how some people might feel while they sleep. Sometimes during sleep people have a hard time finding a temperature which they are comfortable in. Also, our body temperature is constantly changing and is affected by the weather, activity levels, food we eat, clothes we wear and more. Even Goldilocks was on a quest to find a temperature that was right for her. Something was always either too hot or too cold, but eventually she found something that was “just right”!

Temperature can affect how long and how comfortably you sleep. “When individuals become too hot or too cold, sleep is disturbed – tossing and turning, waking, throwing the covers off, etc…and you wake up feeling groggy and tired” states an article by Jordan’s Furniture. The ideal temperature for your bedroom is 65 degrees; however there are many other factors that affect how cold or hot you are while you sleep. For example, bedding can affect your temperature while you sleep. The same article from Jordan’s Furniture says, “Traditional bedding can trap warm, moist air. This leads to an uncomfortable sleeping environment which works against what your body is naturally trying to do…cool down.”

Often finding the perfect sleep temperature that matches both spouses’ needs can be problematic. Men and women tend to differ in what temperature they prefer to sleep in: some like it hot, some like it cold. The National Sleep Foundation found that American couples will lose, on average, nearly an hour of sleep tonight alone because of temperature related issues. So how do you eliminate the number of blankets to have or having to compromise on the temperature of your room? The YuMe bed of course.
