I had never thought about how a pillow could determine whether you have a good night’s sleep or not. I thought the mattress was the only thing that was necessary for sleeping well. Now I have learned it is a combination of both! Have you ever slept in a great bed, but you still tossed and turned because your neck was bothering you? Or have you woken up with a bad headache? A good pillow could be a quick fix to those problems!
When I used to shop for a pillow, I always wanted the fluffiest pillow. Then I would always end up with a stiff neck or a headache when I would wake up. I also would keep my pillow well after I probably should have replaced it. Here is what I have learned about picking the perfect pillow:
- Pick a pillow that is going to keep your head parallel to the bed. You don’t want your neck to be straining at an angle. The pillow should be the same width as your shoulder.
- Pick a pillow for your special needs. If you have neck pain, a contoured pillow might be your best option. Find out what purpose each pillow serves.
- Do not keep a pillow past its suggested life span. A pillow is like anything else; it will eventually wear out. If your pillow is losing its original shape, it will not support you like it should. So replace it!
- Try the pillow out! You won’t know if the pillow is right for you until you try it out.
I did all those steps and picked the best pillow for me. My favorite pillow is the Coconut Pillow. It’s a thinner pillow so my neck isn’t at an angle when I lay down, and I like that it isn’t too hard either. All my neck problems were solved as soon as I started sleeping on the right pillow.
