We, the people of Mattress Firm, in order to show you exactly why our employees love this company, bring you the second installment of the “We The People” blog series! Last week we spoke to an Area Manager in Houston, and this week are heading up north to speak with a District Manager in Minneapolis. Geoffrey Lewis has been part of the Mattress Firm family for three years, and he’s quick to tell anyone exactly why he loves this place!
Q: Geoffrey, I understand you are a District Manager in Minneapolis. What in your life led you to this position at Mattress Firm?
A: After selling my business in 2009, I went to visit my aunt in St. Petersburg, Florida for vacation and had a blast! My days consisted of golf, tennis, water skiing, and fishing. (I caught a shark!) Needless to say I fell in love with Florida and decided to move there. After relocating, my search for a new career began, and I found out about Mattress Firm at a career fair. I learned that the culture and the opportunities with Mattress Firm were awesome, and in addition, they were hiring during a recession! I had my interview and shortly after was offered a position as a Manager in Training (or as my District Manager would say a “Jedi in Training!”) During my time with Mattress Firm, I have been offered many chances to take on new challenges, including managing multiple units of business and helping my team to grow and develop within the company.
Q: What all does being a District Manager entail?
A: As a District Manager I oversee nine stores in Minneapolis, Minnesota. I also help establish our brand and foster lasting relationships within the community through our Give Big, Feel Happy charitable efforts. Other responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and career development of both new and tenured associates. I hold regular strategic planning sessions with my team that are focused on growing them into the leaders of tomorrow. One of my most important roles as a District Manager is to train associates to deliver an unparalleled shopping experience.
Q: What is your favorite part of the job?
A: I enjoy the challenge of training and developing my team in addition to building relationships in the community. Every day I am able to continue to expand my knowledge and gain valuable skill sets like critical thinking, time management and organization.
Q: What is your funniest Mattress Firm related story?
A: When I received my first promotion, some of my Mattress Firm buddies (that will remain nameless) decided to come in the night before my first day and turn everything in the store upside down. I arrived the next morning and the entire store was totally flipped. Mattress protectors, pillows, foot protectors, computer monitors, price tags, window posters, open signs…you name it. They got me good.
Q: And finally, why do you love Mattress Firm?
A: I really enjoy what I do and I love being a part of an organization that provides me with the opportunity to grow both personally and professionally. We have an amazing culture and our brand is really about changing the lives and giving back to those in need within our community.
